Home to about 10,000 residents, the city of Saint Francis is the smallest incorporated city in Milwaukee County. It is also one of the county’s most stable communities, with a municipal government that features first-rate services, a capital asset replacement fund and zero debt. Saint Francis is located on the shoreline of beautiful Lake Michigan and offers many amenities.

Saint Francis is home to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, a faith-based organization that serves families, strengthens parishes, supports schools and forms priests and parish leaders.

The city also recently became home to Harnischfeger Industries Corporate Headquarters and the Milwaukee Bucks training facilities. It is also recognized today as being a leader in promoting extensive and well-conceived light industrial growth and commercial development while maintaining a hometown charm.

Saint Francis also has an excellent educational system. Its school district consists of Willow Glen Primary School serving grades K3-3; Deer Creek Intermediate School serving grades 4-8; and the St. Francis High School serving grades 9-12. The district goes above and beyond to provide its students with a comprehensive education integrating academics, arts, activities and athletics.

Five minutes away from the city is the Mitchell International Airport, which is a 42-gate airport that provides airline service around the world.

Saint Francis also offers many recreational opportunities. Aside from the two large county parks available nearby, it has a local park located within its boundaries, as well as the Seminary Woods Conservancy. The conservancy contains 68 acres of giant trees, rare ephemeral flowers, migratory birds and a wide variety of wildlife. It is considered one of the “special places to preserve and protect” by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in the Land Legacy Report.

The events frequented by locals in Saint Francis are many. The Saint Francis Days Festival is held on Labor Day weekend and features helicopter rides, skydiving shows, pony rides, a petting zoo, horseshoe tournament and the city’s largest parade. Its Fourth of July celebration is an all day event with bands and lots of fireworks. The Miss Saint Francis Pageant is ranked in the top 10 in the United States in scholarships awarded. And the local National Night Out event is rated fourth in the nation and hosts military displays, exhibits, demonstrations, an antique car show, live music and fireworks.

The early settlers in the area were the Native Americans. They called the land “Nojoshing,” meaning “land which goes into water.”

From the European immigrants who later settled in the area, a local bishop founded the Saint Francis seminary, which aimed to serve the entire Milwaukee County. The area soon became known as Saint Francis.
