History
The Potawotomi and Menominee tribes were required to move west from the area by a treaty. The land was sold for less than $1.50 per acre to new settlers by the United States government in the 1830s.

Brothers, Seneca and William Hale purchased 160-acres of land in 1837. Ebenezer, their father, purchased another 160-acres of land on the east side of the area. Three of the four corners were claimed by the Hale family. Its popularity for agricultural opportunities created a market for commercial development.

The area was first called “Hale’s Corners” after William Hale who became the first postmaster (apostrophe was removed and the name remained). The area became a base for commercial and residential properties. Hales Corners was incorporated as a village in 1952.
