Franklin, Wisconsin was named after one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America, Benjamin Franklin. The town was divided from its original Town of Kinnickinnic in 1838. The township had to fight through many annexations to the city of Milwaukee during the 1950s. Residents fought to keep Franklin a town when proposals were being considered. To resident’s disapproval, Franklin was incorporated on August 15, 1956. It was the second city to use the new law that allowed farm and rural area to incorporate.
