History of Sheboygan

Sheboygan was founded in 1846. By 1849 it was known for its German population, although the name of the city itself is a Chippewa word whose meaning is still unclear to this day. Most authorities, however, believe that “Sheboygan” is derived from “Zhee-bo-i-gun,” which is a Chippewa word for pipe or hollow reed – perhaps referring to the unique way sound travels at the mouth of the Sheboygan River. The name of the city is a constant reminder of the Native Americans who lived in the area before it became established as a city. Today, Sheboygan has a culturally diverse population, genuinely friendly residents and a progressive outlook in local government, making it a delightful place in which to live and work.
