Milton, Wisconsin offers a hometown charm nestled in southeastern Wisconsin north of Janesville and Milwaukee, Rockford and Chicago, all within a short drive.

With more than 5,500 residents, this rural area provides acres of gorgeous prairies and glistening streams. Once home to the prestigious Milton College, several of the buildings have been restored as apartments, offices, the city library and local shops.

The Milton area provides homes, which include old historic two-story homes to newer ranch homes. The average price of a home in Rock County is $119,000.

The city also offers recreational programs through the Rock County YMCA, which operates youth softball and football programs in the summers. Youth sports are also offered by private leagues.

The area also has year-round recreational opportunities from hiking and biking through the Storrs Lake Nature preserve using several miles of the Ice Age Trail. The city has five lakes nearby. Oak Ridge and Bonny Mead Golf Courses boasts 9 and 18 holes of beautiful golf.

Known as the Prairie du Lac (Prairie of the Lakes), Milton was occupied by soldiers who served during the Black Hawk War in 1832. The soldiers called it “a veritable modern Eden.” When trying to establish a post office, the name “Prairie du Lac” was rejected by the territorial governor. A current name of Milton came to fruition, because of a settler who thought of it as a “Paradise Lost,” which is a poem written by John Milton.

Milton is home to the first concrete building in the United States, a hexagonal stagecoach inn (The Milton House), that was constructed in 1844 originating the legacy of Joseph Goodrich. Goodrich was an abolitionist who had tunnels created underneath the inn that provided a hiding place for runaway slaves. The Milton House is currently a museum. Tours of the house are provided by the Milton Historical Society.

A second community, one mile west of Milton, was established as West Milton. Two railroads were built through West Milton. The crossing of the railroads led to the name Milton Junction. Milton and Milton Junction functioned as individual communities until the merger in 1967. There are two downtown areas that serve as proof of the existence of the separated communities in Milton.
