You spent the past month spring cleaning your house and learning how to get rid of clutter. Now that you have cleaned out your closets (and underneath your bed), it’s time to have a garage sale. These tips will help you prepare for your sale:
-Preparation is key. Go through your closets, your kitchen drawers and any other space that holds your stuff. Any item that you haven’t used in the past year — clothes, accessories, bedding, kitchen — you can live without. Put in the garage-sale box.
-Make sure you have lots of change. People tend to carry cash to garage sales, and you will want to be able to make change easily.
-Advertise on the brightest poster board you can find. It will stand out in your front yard and nearest intersections to your house.
-Check with your municipality on getting a permit. Most cities/villages/towns require you to purchase a permit for the weekend you’re having a garage sale.
-Price and label all items you are trying to sell. If you’re having a hard time figuring out a price, it’s suggested to aim for 25% of the original price.
-Start early. Many garage sale attendees like to start early, especially if they know what items they might expect from you.
-Negotiation can be fun. You’re trying to get rid of your stuff — you don’t want to bring it back inside! Be willing to accept reasonable offers.
