One of the best crafts of the Halloween season is pumpkin carving. From flexing your creative muscle and creating a glowing work of art to roasting the seeds and making a yummy snack for later, pumpkin carving is one of the best things about Fall for many people. However, the downside of pumpkin carving is that these creations never last forever. While it is sad to throw out a pumpkin that you worked so hard on, there are ways to make your pumpkin last longer, so you can carve earlier and still enjoy your creation for a few extra nights after Trick or Treat!

Peppermint Dish Soap

Did you know that peppermint is a natural anti-fungal and can stop your pumpkin from rotting? When you mix one tablespoon of peppermint dish soap with a quart of water, you create a mix that you can spray on your pumpkin to slow the decomposition process. Plus, most animals and bugs dislike the smell of peppermint, so you don’t have to worry about your pumpkin being eaten, either!

Refrigeration

In Wisconsin, Halloween is known to be either freezing cold, or rather warm. In years where October is unseasonably toasty, you may want to try placing your carved pumpkins in the fridge overnight. By taking your creations off the porch, you’re keeping your pumpkin out of the elements, especially humid night time air. For an added trick, spray your pumpkin with the same peppermint soap mixture mentioned before, and wrap them in a trash bag before refrigerating. Not only will your pumpkin last longer, but your fridge will smell good too.

Soak your Pumpkin

Just like with humans, the best way to keep your pumpkin looking young and fresh is by keeping it hydrated!  If you notice a wilting pumpkin, don’t be afraid to dip it. Soak your pumpkin overnight in a large bucket of cold water to bring it back to life.

Carved pumpkins are a staple of Halloween and you should be able to enjoy them until the holiday is through! Not only will these natural preservation tips keep your home looking spooky, but they will also ensure that your pumpkin will be safe for animal consumption after the holiday. Squirrels and deer will thank you for making a natural choice when carving your pumpkin, and your family will be happy that they get to enjoy their art for a longer period of time. Don’t forget to scrape your pumpkin out extra well, and use those seeds to make a delicious, vitamin rich snack!
