You bought your new house from your Shorewest Agent and can’t wait to move in. Before you step foot into your dream home, here are 10 things you need to do:
1. Address Change. Stop in to your post office or visit the USPS website to change your address. Changing your address early will help ensure a smooth transition into living in your new home.
2. Update Contact Information. Update your contact information forms —creditors, financial institutions, schools, publications, etc. This will help get your mail to your new house.
3. Change The Locks. Changing the locks in your house will ensure you’re the only person who has access. You can do-it-yourself or hire a locksmith.
4. Deep Clean. Before you move in, deep clean your new house. Clean inside the closets, cabinets and drawers. Clean your carpets, wash your furniture — and do it all before you move in!
5. Call An Exterminator. Even if you don’t think your new house has pests, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
6. Turn On/Shut Off Utilities. If you’re moving from a house, make sure you turn off your utilities at your old place. If you’re moving into a house that has been unoccupied for a while, call and get your utilities turned on.
7. Alert Service Providers. Calling your cable company, gardener, landscaper, newspaper delivery etc. — call anybody that regularly provides service to your house.
8. Purge. The only thing worse then moving boxes of stuff you don’t use is having them crowd your new space. Purge your stuff and get rid of unwanted/unneeded items before you move. You can host a garage sale or donate to charity.
