Purchasing a house is the biggest investment you will make in your lifetime. Although you may feel like you’re constantly spending money, there are ways that you can actually save money. Here are seven ways to save money on your move:

1. Downsize. You don’t need to take everything with you. Furniture, appliances and home décor items can all be included in your home sale. First-time home buyers or buyers from out of state may appreciate it. You can also host a garage sale.

2. Leave the flat screen. If you mounted your flat screen television, consider leaving it behind. The cost of taking it down and repairing the wall may not be worth it. If your television is a couple years old, here’s your excuse to purchase a new one.

3. Negotiate. You need to be willing to negotiate everything — closing costs, playground equipment, hot tub/pool, etc. There are lots of things that can be negotiated, just be willing too.

4. Barter for services. Need a handyman to help you? Ask around for referrals and introduce a barter system.

5. Move smart. If you’re willing to work up a sweat, you can save a bundle and do it yourself. If you don’t want to do the whole thing on your own, here are some ways you can save:

-Do the packing and unpacking yourself

-Have everything on one floor

-Pare down

6. Take advantage of special offers. Move-in offers for cable, internet and phone service can save you lots. Look for special limited-time offers.

7. Don’t rush the renovations. After you move in, you’re going to start receiving all kinds of offers to credit card companies, landscaping, home décor, etc. If you’re planning to shop, renovate or do some work on your interior or exterior, take advantage of some of these offers.
