Irish immigrants were the second largest ethnic group in Milwaukee — representing about 15% of the population. The Irish settled in the Third Ward for its easy access to jobs on the waterfront, rail yard and the developing industries. After a fire left over 2,500 homeless, the Irish Milwaukeeans settled in the area now known as Marquette University.
The idea of a three-day fest to promote Irish culture through music, dance, cultural events, drama and sports was discussed to promote Gaelic heritage. Under the direction of Ed Ward, the first Irish Fest premiered in 1981, incorporating an extensive lineup of musical entertainment and cultural programming. By 1992, Irish Fest hired a full-time executive director and opened its first office.
