Waushara County, Wisconsin

Waushara County, located in the center of the state of Wisconsin, has 150 miles of clear rushing trout streams and 96 lakes. It is almost entirely rural, making it a place of beauty and serenity.

The name means “big fox,” and the county seat is the largest town — Wautoma, with its population of 2,500 people. Waushara County has a population of about 24,000 people.

Main highways in the county include Interstate 39 and U.S. highway 51. State highways that traverse Waushara County are these: 21, 22, 49 and 73. And the numerous county highways provide additional safe and convenient travel. Travel time from Milwaukee to Wautoma is approximately two hours. From Madison or Green Bay to Wautoma, travel time is one and a half hours.

Waushara County Homes

Waushara County is a great place to purchase a vacation home and to retire to. For these, there are many year-round homes for sale that provide that feeling of being “away from it all” and having the conveniences modern living demands. Waushara Country Club challenges on its 27 holes and professional course layout, and beautiful Two Oaks North offers 18 holes and another beautiful setting. Nordic Mountain Resort features runs and trails for just about anything you can ride. Snowboarding, skiing and tubing confirm Nordic Mountain’s tag line of “where fun rules!” Edenwood Ranch and Preserve offers hunting, ATV trails, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, wildlife photography, swimming, boating — as you can see, just about everything. The Waushara Archers has 40 acres of rolling hills that feature 28 targets and shooting towers.

Other excellent cross-country skiing opportunities are Willow Creek Trail in Mt. Morris and Kusel Lake Trail in Wild Rose. Contact the Waushara County Snowmobiler’s Association for location and condition of the snowmobile trails in the county.

County parks in Waushara County are many. They include Lake Alpine County Park, Kusel Lake County Park, Mt. Morris Hills and the George Sorenson Natural Area at Harford Lake. Indulge!

Culture and Dining

Activities in Waushara County are not limited to outdoor pursuits. For example, the Black Hawk Folk Society promotes folk-style music and sponsors concerts and festivals. Shara Sounds/Hold On Quartet are singers from the county: Shara Sounds is a choir and the Hold On Quartet are male vocalists who sing patriotic, contemporary and gospel songs. The McCombs-Brunchs Performing Arts Center in Wautoma showcases nationally-known entertainers as well as top-tier local talent.

And then there’s the dining. In the town of Coloma you will thrill to Lavore’s on the Hill with its beautiful location and unique menu selections. In Wautoma, try Blader’s Dakota Inn or the Moose Inn Supper Club for fine dining. Or stop in at Cheapskate’s Bar and Grill or at the Lakeshore Family Restaurant for a more casual experience.
