The highest point in Sauk County, located in the Baraboo bluffs, is Sauk Point at 1,593 feet. The population of the county is about 62,000 people. Baraboo is the largest city in Sauk County and is also the county seat. Highways in the county include Interstates 94 and 90, U.S. highways 12 and 14 and Wisconsin state highways: 16, 58, 23, 33, and 60 among others. Sauk County has many county highways and scenic roads, too.

The natural areas of Sauk County include oak savannas and sedge meadows.

Sauk County, Wisconsin is Unique

In Sauk County, you will find unique natural land formations that attract the eye and entertain the senses. The Baraboo Hills, in particular, has stone and rock formations left over from the glaciation period thousands of years ago that you find in few places on Earth. These stunning rock outcroppings are in delightful contrast to the valleys and glens of the area. This beautiful region also harbors many rare plants and animals, which contribute to the area’s uniqueness and which have helped The Nature Conservancy list the area as one of the world’s “Last Great Places.”

The village of Baraboo, named after the Baraboo River, was founded by Abe Wood in 1838. The village later fought hard with nearby Reedsburg to become the Sauk County seat.

In years past, Baraboo was the Ringling Brother’s Circus’ world headquarters and winter quarters, and subsequently became known as Circus City. Today the renowned Circus World Museum features early circus wagons, a variety of circus items and costumes and the largest collection of circus records and historical literature in the world. Also located near Baraboo is the International Crane Foundation. This organization is dedicated to the preservation and study of the world’s 15 species of cranes, including the endangered whooping crane.

Another attraction is the Big Cat Rescue in Rock Springs. This non-profit group takes in abused, orphaned and abandoned felines like lions, tigers and panthers and cares for them, giving these animals an opportunity to live a healthy life.

Another famous site is Devil’s Lake State Park. The largest state park in Wisconsin with over 9,000 acres, Devil’s Lake features rock climbing on the bluffs overlooking the lake, picnicking, camping, swimming and hiking.

Sauk County is also home to Aldo Leopold’s farm and famous shack. Leopold, considered the father of modern conservation methods, is the author of A Sand County Almanac, which Leopold wrote about this intriguing part of the state and which is used as a university text book in many parts the world.

Things to Do in Sauk County

Sauk County features other fun things to do and see. These include pick-your-own orchards at Held’s Orchard in La Valle and the Lazy Patch Farm in Hillpoint; bike tours such as the Baraboo Range Tour in Baraboo and the Frank Lloyd Wright Heritage Tour in Spring Green; and farmer’s markets in Baraboo, North Freedom, Prairie du Sac, and Reedsburg. Check out the “400” bike trail near Reedsburg, named for the former rail line that ran along the present-day route, and the Sauk County Fair in North Freedom. North Freedom is also home to the Mid-Continent Railway Museum and there is the Park Lane Model Railroad Museum in Reedsburg. Enjoy gaming at the Ho-Chunk Casino in Baraboo.
