Green County is situated in south central Wisconsin and borders the neighboring state of Illinois. The county comprises 563 square miles, and has two cities, six villages and sixteen towns. The population is approximately 37,000 people.

Green County’s largest city is Monroe, the county seat. In the center of the city square in Monroe is the county courthouse, a well-known local landmark. Built in 1891, the courthouse is constructed of marble pillars, with granite block accents. This historic building has arched porticos and a 120-foot clock tower, and is open for tours daily.

Green County takes its name from Nathanael Greene, a quartermaster general in the American Revolutionary War. The county is famous for its green rolling hills, productive farmland and the hometown flavor of its towns and villages. Highways that traverse Green County include state highways 11, 39 and 59, among others, and many county highways.

Towns and Villages in Green County

Come to New Glarus in Green County for a taste of Switzerland without going to Europe. People call New Glarus “America’s Little Switzerland” for good reason. Festivals in this quaint town include the Heidi Festival and the Wilhelm Tell Festival. Shop for Swiss clothing and gifts in the shops of New Glarus and taste Swiss flavors in its Swiss-style restaurants and a bakery. You will find chalet-style businesses and homes in the village area to enjoy and a Swiss museum and a church, too. Linger at the town’s Swiss tavern where the people play the traditional card game, Yass.

New Glarus was founded in 1845 by a group of 108 Swiss emigrants who hailed from the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland. Experience historic artifacts and information about this pioneer group at the New Glarus’ Swiss Historical Village Museum.

Sites worth mentioning in New Glarus, among others, include Turner Hall, a traditional Swiss gymnasium; Ticino’s, which offers, guess what? Swiss pizza; and the New Glarus Hotel and Chalet Landhaus, which features authentic Swiss cuisine.

The town of Monroe not only has the courthouse mentioned above; it is also known as a producer of fine Wisconsin cheeses and, like New Glarus, incorporates Swiss-style architecture in its buildings and homes. Other towns to explore in Green County for fun and cultural enrichment include Monticello, Brodhead, Albany, Brooklyn and Belleville.

Green County Recreation and Sites

Green County has numerous recreational activities throughout the year for you to enjoy. For a leisurely canoe trip, there’s the wide, mild Sugar River. Choose from miniature, disc or “regular” golf at seven courses in and around Green County. Hike or bike the Badger State Trail, the Cheese Country and Tri County Trails, or the Sugar River Trail. For a more rustic hike, part of the state-wide Ice Age Trail snakes through Green County. You can also drive the many state-sponsored Rustic Roads in the county for an unusual automobile adventure.

Other exciting activities include fishing for brook or brown trout in 11 different areas of the county, and snowmobiling on over a hundred miles of trails. And Green County has the only ATV trail in southern Wisconsin.

Green County also sponsors “Geocaching.” This game is a world-wide phenomenon that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to help participants find the “cache,” a visitor’s book to which players add their names after they find the book. This hide-and seek-type activity has more than five million participants around the world.

More traditional activities in Green County include quilting, cheese-making and wine tasting. Cultural events are presented at a number of venues, including the Monroe Theatre Guild, the Monroe Arts Center and the Swiss Center North America.
