Winnebago County’s main attraction, in some respects, is Lake Winnebago. The four other large lakes in the area, Winneconne, Poygan, Butte de Morts and Rush Lake, add to the fact that Winnebago County is almost 25% water.

The population of Winnebago County is 167,000 people. It is located in northeastern Wisconsin, and the county seat is the city of Oshkosh. Main roadways in Winnebago County include U.S. highways 41, 45 and 10; Wisconsin highways 21, 26, 44 and 47 among others; and numerous county highways and state-designated “rustic roads.” Travel time to Winnebago County from both Milwaukee or Madison is one and three-quarter hours. Travel time from Green Bay is one hour.

Some of the larger cities and towns in Winnebago County, in addition to Oshkosh, are Neenah, Menasha, Omro, Poygan, and Winneconne. Smaller towns and villages include Allenville, Black Wolf, Eureka, Little Point and Mikesville, among others. And there are two ghost towns in Winnebago County: Delhi and Minden.

Winnebago County Attractions

In Winnebago County there are fun “things to do” in summer, winter, fall and spring. For example, for the family that loves to camp there is a campground in Fremont, Triangle Farm Campground, and three others in Oshkosh, including the Hickory Oaks Fly-in and Campground located near the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) annual Air Venture. Pick-your-own apples at Roo’s Apple Orchard in Omro or Rasmussen’s Apple Acres near Oshkosh. Cloverleaf Cheese in Neenah, Union Star Cheese Factory in Fremont and Utterly Unique Cheese Company in Oshkosh all offer tours and tasting of fine Wisconsin cheeses. Each year the Winnebago County Fair is held in Omro, where there is also the Knigge Family Dairy Farm that you can tour and observe their robotic milking technology (wow!).

Are you into art? In the city of Neenah there is Art Affair and The Hang Up Gallery of Fine Art. Oshkosh offers the Priebe Art Gallery and Menasha has the Aaron Bohrod Fine Arts Gallery. Farmer’s markets in summer and fall, where one can buy fresh, locally-grown produce, are almost too many to mention. These include Menasha’s Farm Fresh Market, the Neenah Farm Market and the Omro Friday Night Farm Market, among others.

Winnebago County has a fascinating mix of Native American and European settler history. Check out the Oshkosh Public Museum, the Velte History Room in Neenah and the Tayco Street Bridge Tower Museum in Menasha. There’s an environmental education center in Neenah called The Wild Center, in Menasha check out the Weis Earth Science Museum, and in Oshkosh you can explore the Paine Art Center and Gardens.

Two major state trails traverse parts of Winnebago County. They are the WIOUWASH Trail which is 22 miles long and was built on an abandoned railroad bed, and the 5.3 mile Mascoutin Trail. Both offer biking, hiking, and horseback riding in summer and snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter.
