History
Named after a “Big Bend” in the Fox River, the village was a part of the “Great Wisconsin Land Sale” of 1839. Aaron and Elvira Putnam were the pioneers of the village constructing the first sawmill in 1831, the first inn in 1842 and the first post office in 1846. Spring water out of Hygeia Spring #2 was the first profitable product when it was sold for a penny a glass at the World’s Fair in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. Incorporated in 1928, Big Bend was well-known for its maple syrup, oak trees and black walnuts, which are still recognized today.
