If you prefer a touch more urban excitement in your hometown, look in Germantown. Germantown, Wisconsin’s real estate market is rapidly expanding ­­— in fact it has doubled in the past decade — and features open-concept ranches, charming Victorians and custom-built homes with luxurious amenities. Washington County’s Golf and Parks Division operates and develops the over 1,200 acres of parks throughout Washington County. Check out Homestead Hollow County Park in Germantown for 105 acres of trails, hills, playground equipment and various athletic fields. For a more prehistoric park, head to Farmington’s Lizard Mound County Park to see Native American effigy mounds. In fact, the park gained its name from a mound shaped like an enormous lizard! Want to go to a beach? No need to leave Washington County! Just head to the Town of Polk and visit Ackerman’s Grove County Park. On the shore of Little Cedar Lake, Ackerman’s Grove offers hiking trails through wooded hills lined with wildflowers as well as a swimming beach and lakefront picnic area.

The Golf and Parks Division also runs and maintains the Washington County Golf Course. Hit the links at Washington County’s 18-hole championship golf course, named the #2 Municipal Golf Course in the Nation by Golf Digest. Washington County Golf Course is surrounded by the gorgeous scenery that Washington County is known for. Not feeling completely confident in your golf game? The Washington County Golf Course employs a PGA Professional and two PGA apprentices who are available by appointment to perfect every shot.

In addition to Washington County’s extensive outdoor activities, there are also plenty of museums and galleries to visit. The Museum of Wisconsin Art, located in West Bend, houses two main collections as well as many featured exhibitions. After strolling through the beautiful museum, sign up for a MOWA educational program, such as family scavenger hunts, technique lessons and special activities for babies.

While you’re in West Bend, stop in the Old Sheriff’s Residence and Jail. This old sheriff’s residence from the 1800s is one of the last remaining in America. Tours begin at the Old Courthouse Museum, another West Bend treasure. This local history museum was the county courthouse until 1962. Today, it houses the Washington County Historical Society and houses exhibits describing Washington County’s history all the way back to when the land was carved out by glaciers.

Wishing for a lively musical festival? Look no further than Addison, Wisconsin. The WCC Concertina Jamboree Festival, held over Labor Day Weekend, features dancing, singing and music. If you want to take home your own concertina, the WCC Concertina Jamboree Festival is the perfect place to start to find these collector’s items. If the music moves you, jump right in and show off your best polka. Feeling a little more reserved? Spectators travel from all over to be a part of this entertaining, exciting festival.

Washington County Schools

Washington County students benefit from over seven school districts dedicated to their academic success. The School District of Slinger serves Addison and Slinger through three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The West Bend School District, located in West Bend, Wisconsin, was recently recognized as a member of the College Boards AP Honor Roll for excellent scores on Advanced Placement examinations. Additionally, U.S. News and World Report ranked WBSD’s West High School as the fourth best high school in Wisconsin. In Hartford, the Erin School District focuses on engaging their young students in challenging academics as well as satisfying artistic and athletic endeavors. The Kewaskum School District focuses on its small town feel by giving personal attention to each student and building a sense of community within its three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one career academy. The Germantown School district boasts four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, each with a dedication to “empower and inspire every student to success.” During the 2013-2013 school year, GSD’s Germantown High School ranked in the top twenty public high schools in Wisconsin and Richfield Elementary School ranked in the top ten elementary schools in Wisconsin. The Gannett Newspapers ranked the Richfield School District, another of Washington County’s top performing districts, as the #1 school district in the state!

History of Washington County

Washington County’s first residents were Native American Mound Builders. They lived in the area between 500 and 1000 AD and were largely nomadic. Throughout Wisconsin, archeologists have discovered their effigy mounds, built to resemble creatures both real and mythical. In Washington County, the best example of these effigy mounds exists in Lizard Mound County Park in West Bend, Wisconsin.
