The Elkhorn Area School District offers a diverse, challenging curriculum that aims to promote respect, responsibility and excellence to all its students. It also serves adjacent areas in Walworth County. Located near Elkhorn is the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, which offers a range of educational programs including business, management, marketing, communications, journalism, social sciences and more.

After the construction of the Racine and Mississippi Railroad in 1856, Elkhorn’s economic landscape shifted from one of farming and agriculture to manufacturing and industry. One of Elkhorn’s earliest industries was band instrument manufacturing, which at one time provided employment to many of its citizens. The city has now expanded to accommodate a more diverse array of business activity, much of it seen in one of its many business and office parks.

Elkhorn has many recreational opportunities for its residents to partake in. The city is home to the Walworth County Fair, recognized as one of the best county fairs in the nation. The fair draws more than 100,000 visitors to Elkhorn and features a classic car show, international camping rally, flea market and horse show. Other area attractions include the White River State Trail and several beautiful parks and golf courses. The White River State Trail is a 12.6-mile limestone trail featuring wonderful scenery for walking, biking, horseback riding and in winter, snowmobiling. The three parks in Elkhorn offer athletic facilities, water activities and music. The city also has four three-season golf courses located nearby.

Three young land speculators discovered the area when looking for a likely site to found a village. The land’s plentiful oaks and rich clay promised fertile farm acreage.

The area of Elkhorn was named by Colonel Samuel F. Phoenix, who once saw a rack of elk antlers in a tree and proclaimed, “elk horn.”
