Construction of the town began in 1855 when the Thomas family steadily cleared the wooded western shoreline of Lake Michigan. Other families soon followed establishing their large acre farms in the area. The U.S. Lighthouse Service constructed the Light Station to mark a reef that created a hazard for incoming boats. Maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1967, the lighthouse was updated to ensure enhanced usability. The National Park Service gave the rights to the Light Station to Wind Point with the trust that the village would manage the historic site in 1997.
