Oconto is the county seat and in the early 1900s 6,500 people lived there. Lumbering was the main occupation and employer. Today after the trees were cleared, farming is the main occupation and reforestation programs have become the basis for a recreation industry. Nearby cities include Gillett and Oconto Falls and nearby villages are Lena, Pulaski and Suring. The towns of Oconto County, rich in history, ethnicity and local color include Abrams, Bagley, Maple Valley, Mountain, Pensaukee and Riverview. Recreation and Entertainment

Where does one begin? Trails. Oconto County is known as the “ATV capital of the world.” With over 450 miles of all terrain vehicle (ATV) trails, that’s a no-brainer. But Oconto County also has snowmobile trails, cross-country ski trails, mountain bike trails and equestrian trails. This is in addition to miles of hiking and biking trails. Altogether there are over 1,000 miles of various types of trails in Oconto County and most of these have accommodations nearby so you can spend your days on the trail, eat at pleasant restaurants in the evening, and spend your nights gazing at the stars at your campsite or relaxing at a reasonably priced hotel, inn or bed and breakfast.

Are you into water activities like swimming, boating or fishing? Oconto County has 58 lakes with public access so you can launch your boat or go for a swim. The county also has 341 miles of trout streams.

Check out a unique activity called Barn Quilts of Oconto County. The objective of placing quilts on barns is to celebrate and promote the uniqueness of the area.

Next – Copper Culture State Park and Museum. Established in 1952 after Copper Culture artifacts were found in the city of Oconto, this museum preserves the artifacts and provides information about these ancient peoples.

The First Church of Christ Scientist was built in the city of Oconto in 1886 for $1,137.20. Although the organization was founded in Boston, MA, this church was the first actual building to be erected specifically for this organization’s use.

Discover the oldest logging camp in the United States. The Hold and Balcom Logging Camp in Lakewood operated through the 1920s and much of the camp survives as a historical sight for you to enjoy.

Mountain is home to Bagley Falls, a rapids area of the Oconto River best viewed in spring. Bring your camera!

Cathedral Pines is a remnant of old-growth hemlock and white pine forest which also is the nesting ground for blue herons. It is open May through October.

In Suring you can see one of the few remaining round barns in the United States, and there is a stone barn in Chase, one of the few remaining such barns, this one constructed of field stone.
