Whitewater has become a beautiful environment that has embraced its rich history. The city was established at the convergence of Whitewater Creek and Spring Brook. A corn mill was built on Lake Cravath (Whitewater creek) and was named for the white sand in their water beds. Whitewater immediately prospered after the first railroad line was created in 1853. The city began to deplete when the two largest employers shutdown operations. The emergence of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which became Wisconsin’s second public college, resurrected the city’s economic state to what it has become today.
