Joseph A. Horning, president of Shorewest REALTORS®, wins the Leadership Award at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Top Workplaces breakfast, held on Friday, June 6. This is the second year Joseph has received this prestigious award.

Joseph Horning is a 3rd generation family member to lead Shorewest REALTORS®, Wisconsin’s Largest Home Seller™. While he was a sophomore at Marquette University High School, he spent his summer months as a courier, delivering files and providing maintenance at all office locations. After graduating from Marquette University in 1991 with a degree in Business Administration, he founded and managed the Information Technology Department. After several years, Joseph took over the role of Vice President and eventually was named President in 2002. Under his leadership, the company has grown to 900 sales professionals, 250 staff members and 23 locations throughout Wisconsin. In addition, Joseph has received numerous personal accolades including: Ranking in the top 100 of the Swanepoel Power 200 Most Powerful People in Residential Real Estate, The Business Journal’s 40 under 40 and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World President’s Service Award.

Throughout his career, Joseph has been very involved in various organizations within the field of real estate. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, Metro MLS, and was recently appointed Chairman of the MLS Policy Forum for the National Association of REALTORS®. He is also past Chairman of The Realty Alliance and an Honorary Board Member for LISC in Milwaukee. Outside of the industry, Joseph is currently on the Board of Directors of Marquette University High School (MUHS) and is Chairman of the MUHS Alumni Board. Previously, he served six years on the Pewaukee Village Board and four years on the Community Development Block Grant Board in Waukesha County. In his personal time, Joe enjoys spending time boating, gardening, and hanging out up north with his family. He is also often spotted driving the Shorewest Firetruck in numerous holiday parades  and festivals in communities Shorewest Realtors proudly serves.

What makes Joseph’s leadership style stand out? “John and I make it a point to get out of the office. We have a scheduled rotation where we go out to each branch and spend time with the manager, and they let the office know that we’re going to be there. Then we walk around, and if anyone who is there has anything they want to ask us or talk to us about, it’s an open door policy. We don’t screen our calls. We don’t screen our emails. Our phone numbers are in our roster in our directory for our agents, so they can contact us directly.”

Shorewest, REALTORS® was also named Wisconsin’s #1 Real Estate Workplace for 2014 at the breakfast. Shorewest was recognized for placing 2nd in the Large Company Category (500 or more employees) and the highest ranking among real estate companies.
