Tips to Help You with Your Move
Organizing a smooth move to your new home can become pretty chaotic. We think it’s easy and attempt to do it ourselves, but often forget the small things that can create a hectic situation.
If you hire a moving company for its services, the cost of a local move depends on many aspects and the manpower needed for various moves.
“Variables such as the day of the week and/or month, your flexibility and the size of the crew will influence the hourly rate,” explained Bill Wholean of Coakley Brothers. “The drive time, which is portal to portal, is included in the estimated amount.”
Here are some tips to help make sure your move is handled safely with or without the services of a moving company.
Packing
- Make sure all cartons have tops and are securely taped.
- Use two inch sealing tape (duct & masking don?t adhere well enough).
- Use a lot of paper to prevent crushing.
- Consolidate smaller cartons into one large carton (30 - 40 lbs. is ideal weight per box).
- Tape the tops of plastic totes.
- Remove contents from refrigerators and freezers. Defrosting should be done 24 hours prior to move if they will be stored or sent overnight.
Be sure to pack your items correctly. Most moving companies are not responsible for shipper packed boxes.
Moving
- Clearly mark the top and one side of the box or container with designated room at destination.
- Remove doors and railings prior to arrival for an easy move into your new home.
“Good communication and attention to detail will usually make the difference between a good or bad moving experience,” said Wholean. “To avoid unpleasant surprises closely review the estimate and table of measurements to ensure there is agreement on the scope of the job.
“Moving is a bigger job than most anticipate, start early and please be ready for us.”
